“i am not i” - A Reflection on Wholeness and Presence

In embodied, relational Gestalt therapy, we often explore the parts of ourselves that move in and out of awareness — the versions of us that act, feel, and relate in ways we may not always recognise. This process invites us to be curious about our own multiplicity: the many selves we carry within us, and the one who notices them all.

The following poem by Juan Ramón Jiménez beautifully captures this inner relationship — the dialogue between who we believe ourselves to be, and the quieter, witnessing part of our being that holds wisdom and compassion.

Make it stand out

I am not I

by juan ramon jiménez

I am not I.

              I am this one

walking beside me whom I do not see,

whom at times I manage to visit,

and whom at other times I forget;

the one who remains silent while I talk,

the one who forgives, sweet, when I hate,

the one who takes a walk when I am indoors,

the one who will remain standing when I die.

I Am Not I by Juan Ramon Jimenez - Famous poems, famous poets. - All Poetry

This poem reflects what often happens in therapy — the reuniting of self with self.
In our work together, we might explore the one who walks beside you: the part of you that observes, forgives, and holds quiet strength even in moments of anxiety, grief, or disconnection.

Through Gestalt therapy and embodied awareness, you can begin to meet these inner parts with curiosity and compassion, learning to trust your body’s wisdom and your capacity for connection — with yourself, with others, and with life.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to connect.
